From Wikipedia:
Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe, is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with four Marian apparitions to Juan Diego and one to his uncle Juan Bernardino reported in December 1531, when the Mexican territories were part of the Spanish Empire.

Mexico's independence from Spain was initiated on September 16, 1810. Father Miguel Hidalgo carrying the Standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe gave his speech, the Grito de Delores with the cry "Death to the Spaniards and long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!"

He was later arrested, executed and beheaded. His followers carried the El Doliente de Hidalgo flag symbolizing war to the death without quarter - that their enemies should feel "the suffering of Hidalgo."
